Kicking Off the Patterns of Meaning Initiative

Kicking Off the Patterns of Meaning Initiative

Inspiring the Next Generation Through Art and Industry

On Tuesday, May 27th, the Patterns of Meaning Initiative officially launched.

Led by artist and Patterns Founder Cory Bonnet, the classroom kickoff provided 143 enthusiastic fourth graders from Southwestern PA an unforgettable introduction to the steel industry through the lens of art. These young learners experienced firsthand how creativity and craftsmanship are at the heart of our region's rich industrial heritage—and its future.

Through dynamic visuals, storytelling, and hands-on engagement, students began to explore how steel, structure, and innovation have shaped the communities in which they live. The event not only highlighted the beauty of industrial art but also sparked curiosity about future careers in manufacturing, design, and the skilled trades.

What's Next?

Classroom visits will be followed by field trips to the Patterns Workshop & Exhibit Hall, where students will meet working artists and industry professionals, see industrial artifacts, and create their own small works of art inspired by what they learn.

This initiative is about more than education—it's about building pathways to opportunity, celebrating craftsmanship, and connecting the next generation to the real-world stories behind the industries that power our region.

About the Patterns of Meaning Initiative

The Patterns of Meaning Initiative offers an innovative solution to address the critical challenges facing the manufacturing and steel industries – an aging workforce, difficulty in attracting young talent, and a weak public perception. Recognizing that these industries require new artisans, Patterns of Meaning embarks on an Initiative to use fine arts to engage K-12 students by combining interactive, project-based classroom learning with experiential art exhibits featuring large-scale paintings and sculptures from the Patterns collection.
