Patterns at University of Nebraska Medical Center's Catalyst Project

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) chose Cory Bonnet's "Another Day in the Office" oil and pigment on panel for an adaptive mixed-use redevelopment at the former Omaha Steel Works site.  The site was transformed into a mixed-use office space supporting companies in the healthcare industry.

UNMC's Catalyst Project Blends History and Innovation

The University of Nebraska Medical Center's (UNMC) adaptive mixed-use redevelopment of the former Omaha Steel Works site is a testament to how the past can be honored while paving the way for a vibrant, innovative future. Patterns of Meaning is proud to be included in this project.

The Transformation of Omaha Steel Works

Founded in 1906 by John W. Towle and Fred K. Smith, the Omaha Steel Works played a pivotal role in shaping Nebraska's infrastructure. From crafting parts for urban projects and bridges to securing the contract for the Nebraska State Capitol's steel in 1922, Omaha Steel Works was synonymous with strength and progress.

However, as times changed, so did the needs of the community. UNMC recognized the potential of this historic site and embarked on a project to transform it into a modern, mixed-use office space, now known as "Catalyst."

The genius of the Catalyst project lies in its respect for the past. Instead of demolishing existing structures, they were reimagined. The design team  incorporated the building's industrial heritage, showcasing exposed steel beams and other architectural elements that tell the story of Omaha Steel Works.

This project is an example of adaptive reuse done right. It's a reminder that history isn't something to be discarded, but rather something to be celebrated and integrated into our present and future.
